(10/07/08 update)

Hello people! And welcome to a very special new release Tuesday. Of course every new release Tuesday is special in it's own way; but today we have the extra added bonus of adding a new format to our ever expanding catalog of full contact rock & roll with our first "official" DVD release - ANTiSEEN Destructo Vision. Yay!

In case you were wondering, I added the "official" part because there's actually a DVD included in the One Live Sonofabitch package and, technically, that was our first DVD release. However, for Destructo Vision I got to make a sleeve & booklet the size of one of those Amray cases that regular ol' movies come in; which, to me, makes it an official DVD release. (On a semi-related note, I heard a rumor that for our second DVD release - the ANTiSEEN 25th Anniversary Show; due out sometime early in 2009 - I'm going to get to do a DVD package sized booklet with enough pages to require a staple!)

Anywhoo, more information can be found by clicking on the title above or by visiting the catalog page. There is no official DVD release show planned that I know of (I think it pretty much already made it's debut at the merch table at the anniversary show) but the band - aka Jeff Clayton & Joe Young plus shiny new rhythm section Phillip Keller and Jon Bowman (formerly of Flat Tires & Self Made Monsters respectively) - will be playing with The Dwarves in South Carolina on October 24th. To repeat a theme form earlier in this update, of course a show by either one of these bands is special in it's own way but, believe it or not, this will mark the first live pairing of these two legendary bad boy collectives in each band's literal quartet century of existence! Shocking huh? I thought so too. As I always like to say right around this point in any update, interested parties can get more details on this and many other SCR-related events on the aptly titled shows page.

If I may switch topics quickly before signing off - we're still on track to get Jobjumper back sometime in October but, at this point in the process, are still without an actual date of arrival. As soon as the printer provides us with one I will post it here.

up next:

JobJumper
by Phil Irwin aka The Whiskey Rebel
(release date: October 2008)

after that (as in starting early in 2009), new stuff from: ANTiSEEN, The Besmirchers, Flat Tires, Hammerlock, Hit & Run & Thee Minks; plus one possible super secret release we're not allowed to talk about yet
(09/30/08 update)

Hello and welcome one and all to our crunk-est new release Tuesday to date! (Disclaimer: I don't know what crunk is exactly, although I have seen a number of Lil' John videos on BET, but I saw the term used on the band's webpage & it made me giggle so I wanted to try and work it into today's update. And I did.) Anywhoo, to get back to our main topic, today we are very pleased to add the debut CD, Born To Brawl, by Tucson's kings of Thug Rock Bricktop to our appropriately dubbed catalog of full contact rock and roll.

I know it's not perfect etiquette to single out one member of a band when speaking about a band as a whole but in this instance I would be remiss if I did not point out Bricktop features a long time member of the Steel Cage Army, Downtown Dave, of 440s and Whiskey Bitch fame; also a founding Besmircher and the handsomest drummer in T-Town. (Aside from his ex-bandmate PBR Destroyer, of course.) I would also be remiss if I didn't point out Bricktop guitarist Tony Pickup was / is also in Whiskey Bitch; guitarist Dickard TTT, singer Bricktop Brent and currently un-nicknamed bassist Keith have long pedigrees as well. To find out more about that you can quiz the band yourselves... if you dare. To find out more about the CD you can click on the title above or visit the catalog page.

The record release show took place a few weeks ago but the band has a bunch of shows coming up in and around the Tucson area; interested parties can visit the shows page or stalk the band on MySpace for details.

(09/15/08 update)

I'm sure many of you already know that 2008 marks the 25th anniversary of the birth of Destructo Rock; and you best believe the boys from Brutalsville... the scourge of the South... the undisputed heavyweight champions of Charlotte, North Carolina... (sorry, I think I started channeling an old Cosmo intro. for a second there; I will stop now...) the one, the only, the ANTiSEEN will mark the occasion appropriately. Meaning host a huge blow-out ANTi-VERSARY extravaganza befitting a band of their stature.

As you can see from the wee poster at the left, the "main" show, the one ANTiSEEN will be playing, is this Saturday night at the Tremont Music Hall but there's been a bit of a change in the line-up since Clayton sent me this jpeg - the other two bands on this show are Hammerlock & Joe Buck Yourself. There's also a huge pre-show show Friday night (same venue) featuring The Flat Tires, Before I Hang & oh so much more. Hustle on over to the shows page for more info. (Or click on any of the band links above.) Then start packing your bags!

I have one other exciting news item to report today: the long awaited, revised and expanded second edition of Phil Irwin's (aka The Whiskey Rebel's) first book, Jobjumper, is going to be delivered to the printer this week and all parties involved in the production - basically me, Larry, Phil & Marla - cannot wait to see finished copies! We won't get more specific info. as far as what date the books will physically be in our hands until we get further into the printing process but I will keep you updated. (PS: Wanna see a postcard I made for the occasion? Here's the front; and the back. Phil is going to be in Charlotte this weekend by the way so you can grab one from Thee Whiskey Rebel yourself & save a couple bucks on your order.)

'til next update,

(PS: Did I mention ANTiSEEN will have a limited amount of copies of Steel Cage's first DVD release, which we're not even going to release for another few weeks, Destructo Vision on hand? Well, now I did.)

(09/08/08 update)

No new releases to announce today (as you already know since it's not Tuesday) but I did want to jump in and point out that this Saturday night Bricktop will be celebrating the power and glory of their debut CD Born To Brawl, aka our next new release. And yes, the band will have copies on hand. (This is the only time when the RedEye schedule works to our advantage. It has literally been years since a band has not had copies of their record in advance of their CD release show!)

Anywhoo, if you live in or near Tucson - T-Town to use the band's parlance - you should totally go! (I would but Philly to Tucson is too far of a drive.) These guys are all about the live show too so, trust me, the Vaudeville will be rocking; possibly literally if their foundation is weak.

Then on Sunday you should rest up in advance of the subject of next week's news page update - the ANTiSEEN's 25th Antiversary show. (Which is really two shows, as the pre-show party is a whole night full of full contact rock and roll as well.) Of course, you can get the full line-up for all of these events, and whatever other shows I've been told about, on the aptly named shows page.

'til next week,

(08/19/08 update)

Hello people! And welcome to our last new release Tuesday of the summer. By the time our next new release Tuesday rolls around the air will be starting to get crisp and the leaves they will be a changin' but today it is hot and steamy here in Hostile City. Not really sure what the weather is like in Hilo Hawaii at the moment but I'm sure it's gorgeous. (I mean, it's Hawaii!) Nor am I sure what today's new release subject is doing to celebrate this occasion but I'm thinking it involves working and / or sweating. (The last time Larry spoke to Jeff he was tearing up the driveway of his new house; in order to, I suppose, put in a new driveway.) Personally, I'm celebrating the occasion by updating this website.

On that note why don't we go ahead and consider the full length CD version of Jeff Dahl's Back To Monkey City added to our ever humble catalog of full contact rock and roll; and if all of this feels familiar, that's because I say the same thing every time we add a record to our catalog. Plus, the 6 song 10" picture disc version came out on July 8th. Anywhoo, of course you can find out more about this fine release by clicking on the underlined words above.

(08/06/08 update)

Hey everybody! I know it's a bit of a surprise to see two updates in two days (don't get used to it!) and, actually, today's newsly item is a bit of a surprise in itself. To make a long story short, right before we left for vacation we were contacted by a nice young woman from MTV, inquiring about the possibility of using Hot Damn!'s cover of "Short Shorts" (from The Girl Can't Help It) in a promo commercial for an upcoming Nickelodeon TV movie called Gym Teacher.

(From what I can tell it's a comedy about a gym teacher who fancies shorts of the variety most NBA players wore in the '70s - read: short and tight - causing, no doubt, much ensuing hilarity.)

Anywhoo, while we were gone documents were faxed and contacts signed and, lo and behold, this afternoon they sent us the clip. And it's awesome! I'm still not a hundred percent sure if I have permission to post said clip here or not but you can see the commercial tonight on Nickelodeon at 7:12 PM EST and 8:47 PM EST, and / or on Nick-at-Nite at 10:21 PM EST and 10:54 PM EST.

Mr. Steel Cage and I don't have kids, so I don't know too much about Nickelodeon, but if it's anything like their sister station MTV I gather they'll be rerunning it many times a day until the movie's September 12th premiere so, if you miss it tonight, you can probably see it later in the week. If I can get a hold of additional air dates or permission to post the commercial I'll let you know.

(08/05/08 update)

As promised in our last update, we are here today to celebrate the newest addition to our humble yet ever expanding catalog of full contact rock and roll, Blowfly's Live At The Platypussery CD - the dirtiest, funkiest, hip-hop-est Steel Cage release since... well, our two previous Blowfly releases. But, those were 7"s; this is a whole CD worth of tawdry tunes and is (according to Uncle Tom, who would definitely know) Blowfly's first official live release. At the risk of repeating a word I've used too much on this page already - YAY! As is always the case with these things, more info. can be found by clicking on the title above or by visiting the catalog page.

To celebrate this historical document, and simply because playing live shows to rabid ribald audiences all over the world is what they do, the band will be jetting off to Germany (with one stop each in Finland and Sweden) at the end of the month; literally, weeks after unpacking from their bags from their last overseas trip. The particulars on these dates can, of course, be found on our shows page and / or the official Blowfly MySpace page. (And those of us who don't live in Germany can stay tuned to one or both of those pages for details on their upcoming East Coast tour in December & 2009's Australian & European tours.)

(07/15/08 update)

Hello people! No new releases to release today (that'll happen three Tuesdays from now) but I did remember something I wanted to mention last time; something that, had I remembered it in our last update, would have given me a legitimate reason to mention the shows page. Anywhoo, we're past that now. What I wanted to tell you is that next weekend, aka July 25th and 26th, Arizona will be even hotter, stickier, sweatier and much, much louder (possibly also more drunk) as Tucson and Phoenix play host to the rock and roll debauchery of Whiskey Bitch. Sadly, as we'll be in a different part of the country, we won't be able to go but if you're within driving distance you totally should. And tell everybody I said hi! (More info can, of course, be found on the aforementioned and linked shows page.)

In other, more personal, news I am going on vacation next week; and so is Mr. SCR. (Cause, you know, we're married and all, and still like each other, we go on vacation together.) What that means in terms of this website is the SCR mail order department will be on vacation from July 19th - August 3rd. Therefore, orders placed before noon on Friday, July 18th will be mailed before we leave; orders placed while we're away will be sent Monday, August 4th. Okey dokey? Okey dokey!

I'll see you back here Tuesday August 5th for our next new release Tuesday.

(07/08/08 update)

Happy new release Tuesday everybody! I actually have a couple newsly items to tell you about today so let's get down to business. On the new release front, we are very excited to announce the addition of Jeff Dahl's Back To Monkey City EP to our catalog of full contact rock and roll; Steel Cage's first (and, based on the trouble we had getting this thing pressed, possibly the label's only) limited edition 10" picture disc. If I do say so myself, YAY!

In case you were wondering about the limited edition-ness of it, 500 copies were pressed and, since all of these songs will also be available on the full length CD version we're putting out in August, there won't be a second pressing. (In other words, the day we sell the 500th copy is the day it goes out of print.) As always, you can click on the title above or visit the catalog page for more information. Jeff is still getting settled into his new digs in Hawaii and there's no record release show planned that I know of, so I've got no real reason to plug the shows page here... but I figured I'd try to work it in anyway and, as you can see, it wasn't that hard.

In other Steel Cage news, I realize I've been neglectful about mentioning another soon-to-be new release we've been working on behind the scenes, a re-release actually, of Jobjumper, the first book by Phil Irwin (aka Thee Whiskey Rebel). Much like the re-issue of a record, this edition will feature bonus material not available in the first pressing, in the form of additional chapters, as well as a new jacket design and updated author's notes etc. (I'm not sure how many copies Phil & Marla might have left on hand but there are three left in the mail order stack behind my desk so if anyone wants to grab a copy of the first edition before it completely goes out of print, you can do so here.) We won't have an official release date for the re-issue until it's actually on press but, when we do, I will let you know.

(06/10/08 update)

Hello people! And welcome to the most sweltering new release Tuesday in Steel Cage history. (Thus far.) It's kind of ironic that this particular record is the subject of today's update because the temperature in Hostile City is hovering right around 100 degrees at the moment (it's probably a little warmer here in the attic I call an office) and it literally feels like hell. Plus unlike Phoenix, AZ - where Frank, Sharon & Buck live - it is NOT a dry heat! With that said, I officially declare Labor Party's Hellhound Down CD added to our steamy, sexy catalog of full contact rock & roll. More info. on this release can be found by clicking on the title above or by visiting the catalog page.

In other SCR news, when I was updating the shows page for today's update I realized I had the dates screwed up for Hammerlock's upcoming swing through Texas and, since by up coming I mean the first show is Thursday night at the Rock Bottom Tattoo Bar in San Antonio, I wanted to mention that I fixed said page to reflect the actual dates and towns they will be playing in the Lone Star State this weekend & next week. (Apparently they're playing in Oklahoma City too; I just found out about that one from Liza yesterday.)

(06/03/08 update)

I mentioned a few news posts back that we'd be adding the ANTiSEEN / Blowfly split 7" - released in honor of the 2008 Gray Trash West Coast Extravaganza - to our still humble but ever growing catalog of full contact rock and roll after the tour was over. Seeing as how the tour ended last week & today is Tuesday - aka the unofficial official day of the week on which records are released - it seems like the appropriate time to announce that the 45 is now available here. Specifically, here. (The bands still have copies too which I'm sure you can pick up at their respective merch tables & websites as well.) More info. can, of course, be found by clicking on the link above or by visiting the catalog page.

In other Steel Cage news, as you can see from the boxes below, next Tuesday is also a new release Tuesday for us and, as you can see from the awesome poster to the right of this post that Frank Labor whipped up, Labor Party are having a CD Release Party this Saturday night to mark the occasion. More info. on the show can be found by clicking on the poster or visiting the shows page. More info. on the CD itself will be saved for next update.

(05/15/08 update)

Now, I know I've mentioned the impending ANTiSEEN / Blowfly Gray Trash West Coast Extravaganza on this page more than once over the past few months... but, in my own defense, it's kind of my job to post newsly updates about events and releases and other Steel Cage related ephemera. So, if you don't want to read about these things, perhaps you should go and look at a different page.

Anywhoo, as mentioned in the last update the tour kicks off tonight in LA (scroll down for more info on the full line-up) so if you're going to be in or around LA tonight, I suggest you get your ass down to the Knitting Factory at the appropriate time. (The appropriate time being however early you have to ge there to see all four bands.) Of course there are other shows on this tour as well; like the one this Saturday night Hammerlock is playing. And, of course, you can find all of the dates listed on the shows page.

(05/08/08 update)

Hey everybody! I have no new release type news to announce this week but I thought I would take an opportunity to remind everyone about the ANTiSEEN / Blowfly Gray Trash West Coast Extravaganza, kicking off one week from today at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles. (The full list of dates is, of course, listed on the shows page.) This particular show is going to be quite the par-tay too! As if a double bill of those two bands weren't enough entertainment in itself, opening the festivities will be two super sexy supergroups, Angus Khan & Suckerstar, battling it out for the title of... well, they won't be battling it out for anything really. I just made that up. But they will be playing.

And, in the name of full disclosure, both of these opening bands feature at least one person who has also been in at least one Steel Cage related band. Angus Kahn, for example, features the lovely and talented Mr. Bruce Duff of ADZ (etc) fame. This band also features a number of guys we've never worked with in terms of the label but whose previous bands have been written about a bunch in c14 over the years - Frank Meyer (Streetwalkin' Cheetahs), Derek Christensen (B-Movie Rats) and a couple other dudes, whose names I don't know off the top of my head, who may or may not have been in the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs or B-Movie Rats. (Sorry! LA band guys can be hard to keep track of.)

Suckerstar, on the other hand, boasts an impressive three out of five lovely and talented ladies who have been in three different SCR related bands. Or, wait... Wendy Lee "Sparkle Plenty" Gadzuk is actually only one person (with many different names); who has been in two different SCR related bands to date - the 440s and Whiskey Bitch. But Suckerstar also features Blare N. Bitch & Punky, who were both in Blare Bitch Project; and the group is rounded out by Blare's ex-Betty Blowtorch bandmate Sharon Needles and Lanie Fire, who has drummed for way too many bands to mention here.

Anywhoo, my point with that whole thing was to say, if I were you, I'd get there early. While you're there you can stop by the merch table(s) and admire the festive glory of the hot-off-the-presses ANTiSEEN / Blowfly split 7" we issued in honor of this momentous tour. (Pressed on gray vinyl, natch!) PS: if there are any copies left after the tour ends we will be listing them for sale here - and I'm sure the bands will be selling them on their respective sites as well - so, if you're interested, check back in a few weeks.

(04/15/08 update)

Hello people! And welcome to our first ever (I think) new release Tax Day Tuesday! Of course the Tax Day part kinda sucks, and this page seems like the wrong forum for political discourse anyway, so let's move right on to new release part.

Today we are pleased to welcome the newly expanded, newly fluorescent version of Hammerlock's Barefoot & Pregnant CD to our ever growing, yet still humble, catalog of full contact rock & roll. Although we have re-issued a few records at this point, this is actually the first time we've re-issued one of our own releases and I think that's pretty cool. More information on this edition can be found by clicking on the title above or by visiting the catalog page. And, in case you were wondering, yes - that means that SCR-010 is officially sold out.

Anywhoo, as you can see from the flyer at the left of this news post, they are playing a show at Your Hauz next Saturday; it isn't a CD release show per se but I am sure they will have copies on hand at the merch table. (Tell 'em Mrs. Steel Cage sent you. And that she says hi!) And, of course further information on this and oh so many other shows coming up over the next few months can be found on the shows page.

(03/07/08 update)

I know you all don't expect two updates in the same week (and don't get too used to it!) but I just wanted to jump in and mention a few newsworthy tidbits of scr news to anyone who may be reading this.

#1: The Time For Fuzz Spring 2008 West Coast Tour featuring The Earaches & Holy Name Dropouts (featuring Oni & Steve of the Earaches) kicks off tonight at The Sunset Tavern in Seattle, WA. More info. on this show and the rest of the tour can, of course, be found on our shows page.

#2: The Downbeat 5 are making their annual pilgrimage to / appearance at the famed SXSW Music Festival next Friday; more info. on this show can also be found on the appropriately named shows page or by clicking on the poster.

and #3: It is now 1:00 on Friday afternoon & thus the scr mail order department is officially on Spring Break! Or at least I will be once I post this news update and close the door to my office behind me. Anywhoo, any orders placed in between now and Sunday March 16th will be mailed on Monday March 17th, as per our earlier agreement.

I do have one final bit of news to share with you all - according to some phone conversations I overheard through my office door, we are putting out an ANTiSEEN / Blowfly split 7" in support of the upcoming Grey Trash tour set to invade the West Coast in May. (Do I really need to mention the shows page again? Well, I just did.) I'm still a little fuzzy on the specifics of whether or not this is a "tour only" release (as in, it won't be sold in stores) and will only be available from the bands and / or us or what the release date is but I will try to track that info. down for the next news update.

(03/04/08 update)

Hello people! If you've been following the trail of news updates over the past month or so you already know what we're here to do today... and if you haven't been following along that's fine. Just keep reading, it won't be hard to get caught up.

Anywhoo, I've been waiting for months (literally!) for this day to come so let's get on down to business. On this kinda warm, kinda damp new release Tuesday - the first official SCR new release Tuesday of 2008 - I am oh so pleased to finally, officially, welcome the Armazilla / Polecat Boogie Revival split 7" to our most humble catalog of full contact rock and roll. Yay! More information on this fine release can be found by clicking on the handy link earlier in this paragraph or by visiting the catalog page. And while you're clicking around maybe you'd care to mosey on over to the newly updated shows page; updated by yours truly this very morning and chock full o'tour dates.

In other news, the Steel Cage mail order department will be on Spring Break from March 8th - 16th so any orders that come in before, say, noon-ish on Friday March 7th will be mailed out on or before that day; orders placed in the week that we're away will be sent out on Monday March 17th. Cool? Cool.

(02/18/08 update)

For those of you who have been paying attention, tomorrow was supposed to be our first new release Tuesday of the year; and I have been looking forward to this occasion. But, as the saying goes, shit happens. In this case the shit that happened is that there was a glitch on the Armazilla side of the split 7", causing their otherwise loud and rowdy rawk tune to sound kind of muddy and weird, like you were listening to the song underwater. So, obviously, we had to reject the pressing and make the plant re-run the whole thing. The PBR side sounded f'in good though so, hopefully, they will fix whatever they did to screw it up in the first place - quickly - and both sound sides will sound good. Or rather, they better!

Anywhoo, let's plan on getting back together for that first new release Tuesday of 2008 two Tuesday's from tomorrow, okey dokey? In the meantime you can check out the newly updated shows page & start planning your Spring social calendar accordingly.

(01/28/08 update)

Well, we still haven't made it to the first new release update of 2008 but I do have some news to share with you in the interim. And I'm feeling wordy today, so let's get right to it.

First up, a bit of news on the new release front: with literally about 5 copies left in circulation (there are three sitting in the mail order section behind my desk and I think Travis said they had one or two left over from the stash they busted out for their show in Colorado last week) the time has come to re-issue Hammerlock's Barefoot & Pregnant CD; the band's third full length disc & their first to be released on our label.

Technically I suppose this is not a new release. However, since there are going to be three extra tracks added on (two that feature Thee Whiskey Rebel of Rancid Vat & Alcoholics Unanimous fame; all previously unavailable on CD) and I'm reworking the whole package design - and we decided to give this version it's own catalog number and all that jazz - I am considering it a new release. So there you go.

In other Steel Cage news, there is a ton of news related to the shows page - or rather, there are a lot of shows & tours in the works / on the horizon for the first half of 2008. Things like the realization of the oft rumored ANTiSEEN / Blowfly Gray Trash West Coast tour; The Earaches Spring tour; what is possibly the last show to feature the Jeff Dahl Band as we know it today; and all sorts of other SCR related shenanigans. As always, interested parties can get the full details there. (Or here.)

I have to admit the Jeff Dahl relocation thing isn't actually news to me, since he told us he was thinking about moving a while ago, but I haven't posted anything about it here because I wasn't really sure it was my news to tell. Earlier today though, as I was doing my least favorite semi-monthly task of stalking all of our bands' MySpace pages to see if there are any shows I need to add to the SCR & RedEye shows pages (a job I hate because it always takes me FOREVER to do, plus MySpace hates my computer and always causes it to freeze up or bomb out at least once during this procedure), I noticed he put a note about it on there. And I figured anything posted in that kind of public forum is meant for public dissemination so, in his own words, here is the deal on that show:

"This is the last Jeff Dahl Band show in Arizona! Maybe the last in the continental US!! Yep, I’m moving back to my home state of Hawaii and leaving Arizona. So this is the last show! I don’t know when / if I’ll be playing again anywhere in the USA (other than Hawaii) so if you want it, come & get it! Also on the bill are those downhome shitkickers The Earps and Arizona’s finest punk rockers Labor Party. You can expect a lot of weird people to join us onstage for one last blow. Hope to see ya there...."

Just to make this clear - this bit of news is not to be interpreted as "this will be the last show Jeff Dahl will ever play." Because it is not. In fact, he's already got a European tour in the works for the Summer. It is however going to be the last show he's gonna play with Frank, Jason & Russ for the foreseeable future. Unless all three of them pick up their families and move to Hawaii; or Jeff decides he doesn't actually like living in a tropical paradise and moves back to Arizona. Both of which seem unlikely.

Anywhoo, now that I've given us all eye-strain, let's call this news post done.

(01/16/08 update)

Hey everybody! And welcome to our first update of 2008. Sadly, I don't have a hell of a lot of news to share with you today; but I didn't want to wait until our first new release Tuesday of 2008 (which, as you can see below is still five weeks from now) to update the site. I suppose I could make some stuff up or fill this space with rumor and innuendo but what would be the point.

I have heard one Steel Cage related rumor that I believe to be factual and relevant to today's update (which mainly features additions to the shows page; although I did archive last year's collected news and poster links), and that is The Besmirchers are actually playing a show this weekend! Or perhaps I should say they are scheduled to play a show this weekend, lest I jinx anything. Anywhoo, I believe this is the band's first show since Besmirch And Destroy was released, as well as the debut show for the two newest members of the band, so I'm sure that will be quite spectacular. Further details on this and all other SCR related shows that I know about as of today can be found here, or by clicking on any of the other links that will take you to the shows page.

Speaking of live performances, I know New Year's Eve festivities are kind of an old story by now but since you're already wasting time on the internet, why not check out a clip of The Downbeat 5 rocking the chilly streets of Boston as part of their First Night event.
